What it is
Tap a froggie and jump it over a neighbour onto a free square. The froggie you jumped over leaves the board. Keep going until only one froggie is left on the pond. It is peg solitaire, except every colour of froggie plays by its own rules, and finishing with the yellow princess is worth the most.
Most levels take a minute. Some take considerably longer.
A level with all five froggies on the board.
Up to three stars a level. Stars open the bonus levels.
The rules, on the original 2011 cards.
Meet the froggies
-
GreenJumps up, down, left and right.
-
BlueDoes not leave the board when it is jumped. It turns green instead.
-
RedCan also walk one square instead of jumping, and turns green when it does.
-
Yellow, the princessJumps diagonally as well. Finish a level with her for the best score.
-
GreyStubborn. Only the princess can get it off the board.
-
The magic wandTurns any froggie magic for a single move, in any of the eight directions.
How it came back
Froggies is from 2011, and over the couple of years that followed it was downloaded about a hundred thousand times. Then Apple stopped running 32-bit apps, and since nobody was maintaining it, the game simply vanished from the App Store. The domain lapsed a while later. The studio that had written the code for me had long moved on, and by the time I went looking, the source code was gone.
What was left was a backup folder: the old app files, the original drawings, and the 2011 design document. The app files turned out to be enough. Inside them sat the resource archive with every level, every sprite and the tutorial cards from the shipping game. Where the design document, the shipped tutorial and my own memory disagreed about a rule, and they did disagree, the levels settled it: only one set of rules leaves all of them solvable. So the game was rebuilt in 2026 from its own level data, with the drawings from 2011 put back exactly where they were.
In the reboot
- 110 hand-made levels at launch, from very easy to genuinely hard.
- Every level proven solvable without help. A solver checked each one.
- Magic wands and hints if you get stuck. Both are optional, and the stars are better without them.
- A Game Center leaderboard, if you want one.
- 14 languages.
- One purchase unlocks every level. Wands and hints are earned by playing, and there are small packs if you would rather not wait for them.
- No ads, no energy timers, no tracking. It plays offline.

The 2012 trailer
The original trailer, kept as it was. It still shows froggies.com, which is long gone, and the older art the game shipped with back then.
Frogs, in real life
- A group of frogs is called an army. A group of toads is called a knot.
- Frogs do not drink. They take water in through their skin.
- A hibernating frog lays down a ring in its bones each winter, the way a tree does, so you can count the rings and work out its age.
- The North American wood frog spends two or three months of every winter frozen, heart stopped and not breathing, and thaws out in spring none the worse for it.
